“The spot—seen here in its natural habitat—couldn’t be simpler. It’s just Haines doing what he does best: a colored sketch of a well-dressed man. And if that man happens to be wearing a certain brand’s latest offerings…that’s just the magic of business.”
This is Richard. He’s a menswear designer and artist who runs a fascinating blog entitled “What I Saw Today,” a visual record of all the inspiring outfits he sees while roaming New York. Recently, he was employed by J.Crew to help launch their new Men’s Shop in Manhattan – his artwork was used in their storefront display and he was on site doing live sketches of customers.
Several months ago, we commissioned Richard to help us with our FW09 campaign. We held a live sketch session with him and chose our favorite rendering to be used in a wheatpaste campaign covering lower Manhattan (as seen in our previous post). We brought on the talented Hilton Carter to document the session and also to capture a short interview with Richard, where he was able to talk about how his background and inspirations have influenced his illustration work. With that said, we’d like to present to you one of the most talented people we know:
Yesterday, I stopped by the brand new J.Crew Men’s Shop at 484 Broadway to see our friend Richard Haines. He was commissioned by J.Crew to do their entire front window display:
J.Crew also hired him to sketch customers throughout the day:
When visiting Rickey at the 944 office in LA, we saw a great sketch on his wall – it was a self portrait by a friend of his, Richard Haines. Richard’s background is in menswear design; last year, he started a website documenting outfits that he sees throughout his day via sketches. It’s grown quickly and has garnered a loyal following of readers from around the world that enjoy his illustration style well as the details he tends to highlight in the outfits he draws. We got in touch and started chatting about possibilities for working together, and I’m excited to announce that we’ve got some things in the works with him that will be released this summer. Yesterday, BPMW was kind enough to open up their office to us for our live sketch session with Richard – our photographer Dan Chen was on hand to photograph it.
